Regardless of what Apple\u2019s long term plans are, they\u2019ve sent a very clear signal. In their (very influential) opinion, it is safe to build systems that scan users\u2019 phones for prohibited content<\/i>.
That\u2019s the message they\u2019re sending to governments, competing services, China, you.<\/p>\n
Louder, for the people in the back: it\u2019s impossible to build a client-side scanning system that can only<\/a> be used for sexually explicit images sent or received by children.<\/p>\n
The reason Apple\u2019s approach is going far too far comes down to one thing: the difference between law enforcement, where an agency needs good reason to access private data, and surveillance. Apple\u2019s approach is surveillance.<\/i> (And from the company that made the 1984 ad.)<\/p>\n
I\u2019m curious how far they\u2019ve thought out the legal end of this. A government (ours or an uglier one) approaches Apple with a court order saying \u201chere\u2019s a list of hash values we want you to add to the scan list you\u2019re pushing out\u201d. Can they refuse? Or even tell anyone?<\/p>\n
And a whole bunch of the arguments Apple deployed in the San Bernardino encryption case don\u2019t obviously apply if they\u2019ve already built the scan architecture & a government is just adding items to a preexisting list.<\/p>\n
I cannot imagine owning a phone that might decide on its own to send copies of all my photographs to the government for analysis if some piece of software I\u2019m forced to run decides the photos are bad, but that\u2019s precisely what is apparently being deployed.<\/p>\nZahvalnice<\/h2>\n
