Rudolf Elmer<\/strong>, a former Swiss banker and whistleblower, is currently fighting a battle before the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, trying in some way to avoid paying the high court costs imposed on him in almost 15 years of court proceedings<\/strong> in his home country. <\/span><\/p>\n

At the beginning of the 21st century, Elmer decided to replace a comfortable banking life with an uncertain whistleblowing quest, after he published the details <\/strong>of the bank accounts of former clients, which he suspected of tax evasion and money laundering<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n

He was arrested twice in the ensuing court proceedings, tailed by private detectives of the bank Julius Baer, \u200b\u200bwhere he was fired, and eventually managed to escape prison only because he had an employment contract signed in the Cayman Islands, where he was the second man in charge of the branch of that private Swiss bank. <\/span><\/p>\n

Swiss law criminalizes the disclosure of banking secrets, and Elmer admits that despite the $ 400,000 he has to pay for the costs of the trial, he was lucky that he did not end up behind bars like some other whistleblowers in Switzerland. <\/span><\/p>\n
